The Parish Council is sad to inform parishioners of the death of David Lond aged 83.
David farmed at Church Farm, Shelfanger from the early 1950's until his move to the Depperhaugh Nursing Home, following a serious stroke just over five years ago. He was a reserved man but he and his family served the parish well in a quiet way. His mother served on the founding Village Hall Committee and the 'Shels' village football club played on Lond's meadow in Hall Lane before the playing field was created.
David himself inherited from his father the volunteer task of winding and caring for the Parish Memorial Clock. For over thirty years David climbed the church tower at 8.00 am on a Saturday morning to wind the gruelling 80 winds ready for the coming week. He took great care that the clock kept good time and that it was correctly adjusted to meet the seasonal changes in March and October.
His great underlying passion was horses. He organised gymkhanas at Church Farm and, as well as his own animals, had for many years a community of horses boarding at 'half livery'.
Finally David will perhaps be remembered most for his generosity in keeping footpaths open and allowing access to field margins on his land for the benefit of all.
David's funeral will be held at the West Suffolk Crematorium at Risby at 3.00 pm on Friday 18th October. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made at the service in aid of the Stroke Association.
